As Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Benjamin R. Carter, CPA, FHFMA, leads Trinity Health’s financial management, financial reporting, strategic financial and capital planning and budget development. He also provides leadership for the Trinity Health Unified Revenue Organization, a shared services department managing six revenue functions.
Ben came to Trinity Health from the Detroit Medical Center where he served as executive vice president and Chief Operating Officer beginning in 2005. In that role, he was responsible for the operations of the regional system’s eight hospitals and related outpatient facilities. During his tenure, Ben was instrumental in the DMC’s financial turnaround, which resulted in six consecutive years of profitability. He led key growth, cost reduction and profit initiatives in multiple service lines.

Prior to leading DMC operations, Ben spent nearly 20 years in executive-level positions at Oakwood Healthcare in Dearborn, Mich. From 1999 through 2005, he served as CFO of the four-hospital, $900 million regional system.
The Washington, D.C. native started his career at Plante & Moran CPAs in Southfield, Mich. in 1980, where he worked for eight years.
He has served on many boards including Care Tech Solutions, Inc., DMC Care Express, the Invest Michigan Advisory Board and the Boys Hope of Detroit. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
Ben is an alumnus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he graduated magna cum laude with an MBA and bachelor’s degree in business administration.
Ben is a commercially rated pilot and certified flight instructor, who enjoys golf, running and basketball. He is married and has four children.
